General Information About Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) Program
Faculty of Medicine of ilam university of medical Sciences(IUMS) was established in 1990. In the early years of its establishment, medical students were admitted into Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, Isfahan, IR Iran. The first cohort of the medical program in our faculty was initially launched in 1995 with a cohort of 26 students. So far, 24 cohorts of medical students have been admitted and 10 have graduated.
The faculty of medicine has many facilities which include an administration building, libraries, lecture halls, tutorial rooms, laboratories, and skill labs.
IUMS faculty of medicine welcomes students from across the country and all over the world, with diverse backgrounds and far-ranging talents and interests.
Persian proficiency requirement
Academic success at IUMS depend on one’s ability to communicate effectively in English. Academically admissible applicants who do not meet the IUMS Persian language proficiency requirements may be offered Conditional Admission. If conditionally admitted, students will attend the IUMS Intensive Persian Program. students must successfully pass the Intensive Persian Program offered at IUMS. Upon completing the Persian instruction, students will be granted full admission to the University.
Programs
Structure of the MD Program
Medical education in general is a seven years course which consist of four Phases. The first two phases of education (Basic Medical Science and physiopathology), basic professional, biomedical, social and behavioral concepts are introduced. Basic sciences physiology, biochemistry, anatomy and pharmacology are taught and there is a particular emphasis on clinical issues as illustrated through the cases presented in the problem-based learning sessions. Clinical and communication skills are developed and students undertake early clinical placements in hospitals. A campus-based learning and online-education will be applied in year 1 and 2.
After the fourth semester or at the end of Basic Medical Science (fifth semester), students can be eligible to attend comprehensive exam. Passing this examination will be a prerequisite for training period.
Stage 2: during medical education, pathophysiology (3 semester) is the scientific discipline that studies the onset, progression, and underlying mechanisms of clinical pathological processes and diseases, emphasizing theoretical concepts: etiology, pathogenesis, outcome, and the pathophysiological basis of prevention and treatment.
Stage 3 (clinical training, medical stage, 2 years): students are placed within Ilam university teaching hospitals. The emphasis moves towards multi-system disease representations that will form the core of the learning in integrated medicine and surgery. clinical teaching builds upon and reinforces this strong foundation through the core clinical rotations of general practice, cardiovascular, internal medicine, neurology, infection, poisoning, psychiatric, emergency, Obstetrics and Gynecology, family medicine, pediatrics, ENT, dermatology, orology, ophthalmology, orthopedic, and forensic medicine.
Stage 4 (clinical internship, 18 months): students undertake clinical placements (or rotations). These rotations in medicine, surgery, aged care, emergency and specialty areas take place in both community and hospital settings. Internship course will take 18 months and passing 17 months of internship is obligatory according to the approved program. Students can benefit from one-month time off.
